Set in a bleak, post-apocalyptic Germany in the year 2016, the film traces a tight-knit slice of human endurance against a world reshaped by catastrophic solar flares. The atmosphere has been permanently altered: the sun burns too bright to face during daylight, temperatures soar, and water and food are scarce. Crops fail and social order dissolves as communities fracture into survival-driven fragments. Against this harsh backdrop, a small trio—Marie, her younger sister Leonie, and Phillip—makes a perilous journey in a Volvo station wagon outfitted with metal mesh on the windows to blunt the relentless glare. To keep out the sun, they tape newspaper and cardboard to the interior, leaving only a narrow strip for the driver to glimpse the road. Their destination is the mountains, whispered to harbor some possibility of water, a beacon of hope amid the scorched desolation.

The road to safety is relentlessly difficult. The trio methodically scavenges wrecked cars and deserted gas stations for gasoline, water, and food, all while staying vigilant for hostile survivors who might prey on them. The intimate bond among the three is tested by scarcity, danger, and the strain of constantly weighing risk against the chance of finding something essential to survive another day. The tension sharpens when a hooded thief steals from their car and abducts Leonie. After a tense confrontation, Phillip and the attacker—revealed to be a mechanic named Tom—are able to subdue him, and a fragile, uneasy agreement forms: Tom will ride along, and in exchange, Phillip will repair the car’s heat-damaged engine so the group can continue toward the mountains.

As they push forward, a massive metal structure blocks the road, forcing the group to work together to clear a path. With the blockage removed, three of them descend to survey a wrecked car for supplies, leaving Leonie alone in the car. The moment the obstruction is cleared, a scream tears through the roadside silence: Leonie is gone, kidnapped by carjackers. The group rallies, and Tom urges them to pursue a rescue. They locate a larger, ominous sign—the smoke rising from a distant survivors’ encampment—and the plan forms: a diversion using a Molotov cocktail could draw attention away from their attempt to reclaim Leonie, enabling Marie to seize the car and make a break for it. The escape attempt succeeds only partially; Marie manages to start the car and flee with Phillip, but Leonie remains in danger and Phillip’s injury worsens during the flight. The pair confront the grim reality that Leonie’s fate may be sealed, yet Marie refuses to give up on her sister.

Night closes in as Marie retreats to a ruined church to rest, where she is discovered by Elisabeth, a middle-aged woman who offers water and a chance to stay at her family farm. The invitation turns out to be a trap. Marie awakens to find herself imprisoned in a barn, the farm’s dubious hospitality shading into a grim and calculated captivity. Elisabeth’s plan unfolds with a chilling clarity: Phillip will be treated as livestock to feed a family that already commodifies human life, while Marie and Leonie are pressed into arranged “marriages” with the farmer sons. Marie’s resolve hardens quickly. A tense, intimate moment with Micha—the farmer son—ends in violence when she defends herself with a wooden strike, and Leonie, seizing an opportunity, knocks Micha unconscious with a heavy object. Leonie escapes into the woods, and Marie remains bound, forced to confront a terrifying dinner in which cannibalistic hunger becomes a reality she cannot ignore.

Phillip is executed before Marie’s eyes, a brutal reminder of the farm’s merciless logic. Yet Marie’s courage does not falter. She frees herself, discovers other captives—Tom among them—and the group of survivors flees into the surrounding woods. The pursuit intensifies as Elisabeth’s family gives chase, but Tom proves himself capable in combat, dispatching several of the farmers as Marie and Leonie break free in earnest. In a final, decisive moment, Marie confronts Elisabeth and ends the threat with a captive bolt pistol taken from the slaughterhouse. With Elisabeth dead, Marie releases Leonie, and the two sisters—accompanied by Tom—press on into the mountains.

At last they reach a source of water and pause to observe the vast, ruined landscape that lies beyond. Up in the sky, birds glide above the horizon, a stark contrast to the blighted valley below. The film closes on a note of fragile hope: the sisters stand united, looking toward a horizon that hints at possibility even as it remains shrouded in the certainty of a world scarred by catastrophe. The journey is not about a single triumph, but about the endurance of familial bonds and the tenacity to keep searching for life andmeaning when every path forward is hard-won and treacherous.
