The carnival workers were targeted simply because they were available and vulnerable. Father and his associates abducted them at random on Halloween night, when the remote gas station location made it easy to isolate and capture them without attracting attention. Their occupation as traveling carnival workers also meant they were likely away from family who might notice their disappearance immediately.

Father explains that the surviving carnival workers must endure 12 hours of being hunted by six killers known as 'heads.' If any of them survive until sunrise on November 1st, they will be set free. However, the game is rigged, the killers are heavily armed and experienced sadists, while the victims have no weapons initially and must improvise to defend themselves.

Levon is killed early in the game and his body is discovered in a horrifying twist, the captors have cooked his remains and served them as food to the surviving carnival workers during a twisted feast. This reveals the full extent of their captors' cruelty and serves as a grim reminder that escape or survival is nearly impossible.

Charly survives through a combination of quick thinking, physical resilience, and pure determination. She fights off Sick-Head in a bathroom stall using a bat, battles through other killers as they hunt her, and ultimately confronts Doom-Head in the climactic showdown. Despite being repeatedly injured and battered, she refuses to give up, using the environment and whatever weapons she can find to defend herself.

Father, played by Malcolm McDowell, is the orchestrator of the deadly game. He wears a mask and presents himself as the master of ceremonies who explains the rules to the captives. He represents the wealthy elite who pay enormous sums to watch ordinary people be hunted for entertainment, similar to the wealthy hunters in 'The Most Dangerous Game.' His calm, civilized demeanor contrasts with the extreme violence he oversees.

The opening scene establishes Doom-Head's character as a cold, professional killer who takes pleasure in sadistic violence. It also shows that the 'game' has been running for some time, as the priest is already a victim being held captive. This scene sets the dark, brutal tone of the film and introduces the main antagonist before the carnival workers' story even begins.

The ending is intentionally ambiguous. Charly has survived the night and emerges defiant as dawn breaks, but the camera pulls back to reveal a van driving toward her from behind. This suggests that either her ordeal is not over and more threats await, or possibly that another game is beginning with new victims. The director Rob Zombie has stated he left it open-ended to maintain the horror atmosphere.

The six killers are referred to as 'heads' because each one has a distinct, grotesque headpiece or mask that represents their particular psychosis or appearance. Sick-Head dresses as a Nazi, Psycho-Head wears a distorted face, and Doom-Head has his distinctive clown-like appearance. These elaborate headpieces become their identities within the game.

Roscoe is killed by one of the killers during the chaotic hunt. As the group scatters to survive, Roscoe falls victim to the relentless attackers, becoming one of the early casualties in the deadly game. His death occurs off-screen during the initial chaos of the first killer being released.

Venus, the older carnival worker portrayed by Meg Foster, is also killed during the course of the game. She fights alongside the others but ultimately falls victim to the killers hunting them. Her death, like most of the cast, serves to raise the stakes and show the extreme danger the survivors face.

The game is called '31' because the victims must survive for 12 hours, from midnight on October 31st until sunrise on November 1st, a total of 31 hours when combined with the final hour of October. This gives the game its name and represents the endurance challenge the captors force upon their victims.

The mysterious woman who approaches Roscoe at the gas station is one of the captors in disguise, gathering intelligence about whether the carnival workers are armed. Her questioning about weapons and her strange demeanor foreshadows that the entire setup, the stranded RV, the scarecrows, and the ambush, has been orchestrated to capture them for the game.
