Shobhan Babu is determined to mold his son, Raju, into a top student, instilling in him the belief that book knowledge is paramount, rendering general knowledge insignificant. As a result, Raju excels in his studies, consistently securing top ranks throughout his school and college years. However, despite his academic success, he unfortunately lacks both common sense and social skills.
His life takes a turn when he catches the attention of a girl named Shruthi, who begins to date him. After a month, Shruthi musters the courage to confess her feelings for Raju, but he dismisses her advances, as he is obsessively focused on his academic goals.
During a crucial campus placement session, Mr. Parthasarathy, one of the interviewers, turns Raju down, pointing out his neurotic behavior. This rejection leaves Raju feeling disheartened and prompts his father to take action, committing to transform his son into someone more socially acceptable. To achieve this, Raju's parents devise a list of activities he must accomplish before graduation. In pursuit of this transformation, Raju befriends a group of delinquent students, causing Shruthi to rekindle her feelings for him. However, Raju finds himself torn between his desire to succeed and the moral dilemma of deceiving those around him to secure a job.
To set things in motion for the last task on his list—having Shruthi propose to him—his parents orchestrate a fake birthday celebration. Unfortunately, some jealous delinquents create a scenario that leads to chaos, ultimately exposing Raju's parents' plans and causing Raju to lose his popularity.
Feeling betrayed and disillusioned by recent events, Raju comes to the realization that friendship and love are not strict textbooks, but rather deep sentiments that ought to be cherished. He decides to abandon his old persona and explore the world independently. While relaxing by a river one day, he encounters a young boy on the verge of suicide. In a frantic attempt to save him, Raju rushes the boy to the hospital, but tragically, he dies before they can reach it. The boy's suicide note reveals that he was pressured into prioritizing studies over his love for cricket. This prompts Raju to confront the school principal in a heated exchange that draws media attention.
Ultimately, Raju declares that education should not be a mere business and emphasizes the importance of the lessons learned in life. He returns to his old friends, turning down Mr. Parthasarathy's job offer but expressing gratitude for the inspiration it provided him. Years later, Raju and Shruthi marry, and he witnesses a father instructing his son to aim for top ranks for a chance to work at a distinguished company. Raju steps in and gently advises the boy that while hard work may secure a job, following one’s heart can lead to building an entire business. The father retorts against Raju's perspective, only for Raju to confidently reveal that he is, in fact, the owner of that very company before them.
