The Room

Johnny is a successful banker living with his fiancée Lisa in a San Francisco townhouse. Lisa has grown disenchanted with their relationship, seeding tension between them. The uneasy calm sets up the emotional storm that will drive the plot.

Lisa seduces Johnny's best friend Mark, and the two begin a secret affair. The betrayal operates in the shadows, beneath the couple's public life, and threatens to destroy the trust Johnny believes he has built. The spark of infidelity will push all characters toward a dangerous collision.

Having overheard Lisa confessing her infidelity to her mother, Johnny attaches a tape recorder to their phone in an attempt to identify her lover by listening to their conversations. He becomes obsessed with gathering evidence, treating each call as a clue to the truth. This device will later unleash a chain of revelations with devastating consequences.

Johnny and Mark rescue Denny, a neighboring college student, from a fight with an armed drug dealer named Chris-R. After the incident, Denny confesses that he lusts after Lisa, a confession Johnny both understands and disapproves of. He nonetheless encourages Denny to pursue one of his classmates to avoid a dangerous entanglement.

Lisa begins falsely claiming that Johnny has become physically abusive, pushing him into a depressive spiral. He seeks guidance from both Mark and his psychologist, Peter, revealing how fragile his sense of reality has become. The escalating tension foreshadows the unraveling of every relationship involved.

Mark confides to Peter on the rooftop that he feels guilty about the affair. Peter deduces that the affair is with Lisa, which intensifies the power of the secret. In a chilling display of misplaced control, Mark suspends Peter over the roof's edge before relenting.

At Johnny's surprise birthday party, Steven catches Lisa and Mark kissing while other guests are outside, exposing the affair to the group. The revelation shatters the mood and marks a public turning point in the relationships. To deflect attention, Lisa falsely announces that they are expecting a child.

Lisa and Mark flaunt their ongoing affair, fueling a heated altercation between Mark and Johnny. The confrontation exposes the depth of Johnny's jealousy and Lisa's manipulation. He ends the party by kicking everyone out, ending the facade of a perfect celebration.

Johnny locks himself in the bathroom and berates Lisa for betraying him, a raw outpouring of anger and hurt. Lisa calls Mark, signaling that she intends to pursue the affair regardless of Johnny's feelings. The private space becomes a battleground as tensions boil over.

Johnny retrieves the cassette recorder from the phone and listens to the intimate call between Lisa and Mark. The discovery triggers a full-blown breakdown as he smashes and destroys his apartment in a frenzy. The taped evidence confirms the worst fears and seals his emotional collapse.

Overwhelmed by despair, Johnny commits suicide by shooting himself in the mouth, ending his life in his own apartment. Lisa and Mark witness the tragedy, a brutal reminder of the consequences of their deception. Denny, still in the vicinity, waits with the body for the police to arrive.

With Johnny gone, Lisa tells Mark that they are finally free to be together, but Mark rejects her, angry at her manipulation. They stand by Johnny's body with Denny as they await the police, the illicit relationship collapsing into a grim morning-after reality.
