John Lawlor, an undercover DEA agent portrayed by Luke Evans, embarks on a perilous mission nestled within a Chinese restaurant in Minneapolis. His objective is to unravel the nefarious web of drug trafficking orchestrated by the enigmatic billionaire and seafood mogul, Kwang, played by Sung Kang. However, John’s undercover efforts come crashing down when a critical mistake by a fellow agent compromises his six-month-long investigation, leaving him frustrated and disheartened. Just when it seems all hope is lost, John receives a glimmer of potential from an anonymous source in Taipei, who tantalizingly claims to possess the elusive ledger of Kwang Enterprises.
Despite voicing his intention to pursue this lead to his dismissive supervisor, John’s entreaties fall on deaf ears, culminating in an enforced weekend leave intended to keep him away from the case. Unwilling to accept defeat, John takes matters into his own hands, embarking on a journey to Taipei under a false identity, determined to uncover the truth behind Kwang’s operations.
In Taipei, a brewing storm echoes Kwang’s own turmoil as he discovers that his adoptive son, Raymond, has betrayed him by stealing the ledger. Interestingly, Raymond, ignorant of his father’s darker dealings, views the ledger as a document of environmental crimes, specifically Kwang’s involvement in the senseless killing of dolphins. The tension escalates as Joey, Kwang’s wife, who was coerced into marrying him for protection 15 years ago, desperately tries to save her son from Kwang’s wrath. A dramatic twist occurs when Raymond reveals he’s given the ledger to a friend who is en route to meet John at the Marriott Taipei, exposing the family’s fragile dynamics. As Kwang’s men swarm in to retrieve the ledger, a shocking betrayal unfolds—Joey and Raymond manage to turn the tables on Kwang, incapacitating him in a desperate bid for survival.
Upon reaching the hotel, however, the stakes intensify, as the trio finds themselves caught in a fierce confrontation with Kwang’s men. Chaos erupts, and amidst the gunfire, John’s allies are ruthlessly picked off, while the vital ledger slips into the hands of their adversaries. Yet, in a moment of sheer determination, John manages to flee alongside Joey and Raymond, who now find solace in the familiar embrace of Joey’s childhood home in a fishing village.
As the trio settles into a temporary refuge, poignant revelations surface—Joey confesses that John is in fact Raymond’s biological father. This shocking truth unmasks a hidden past; John had met Joey years prior while undercover, and their romantic connection had sparked before deception drove them apart. Their hearts mend through shared confessions of lost time, as John makes a heartfelt promise to never abandon them again. Just as family bonds begin to heal, young Raymond makes a bold move to reclaim Kwang’s flash drive containing his father’s illicit ledger, a decision that unwittingly leads him into danger when he’s caught by Kwang himself.
Kwang’s ensuing threats put the family back in peril as he takes Raymond hostage, forcing a tense negotiation with John and Joey. What should have been a straightforward exchange spirals into chaos when Kwang defies their agreement, abducting Joey and holding her captive. In a breathtaking turn of events, John unleashes his indomitable spirit, outmaneuvering Kwang’s brutal enforcers, and kicks off a relentless chase through the bustling streets of Ximending; this brings them to a climactic showdown in a theater.
In a heart-pounding conclusion, John overcomes Kwang and turns him over to the police, restoring a semblance of safety for his family. With the storm finally passing, John, Joey, and Raymond embark on a heartwarming journey to Paris, where Joey shares joyous news—she is expecting their second child, sealing their renewed family bond with a future filled with hope and love.
