Charlie Mason and Rusty Fleming are star reporters at a Chicago tabloid and a couple. Their reckless antics cause the city editor to quit, and the publisher promotes Charlie, believing only a slacker can rein in other shirkers. His pomposity alienates staff, prompting Rusty to move to New York. Charlie quits and, with gangster friend Smiles Benson, tries to win Rusty back before she marries a stuffy society author. Miss Big Brown Eyes would rather race to a fire than walk down the aisle, while Cary tunes the fire‑gongs to the Wedding March.
