Lucienne Delamare and Pierre Maury have an affair while Lucienne’s husband Paul, the mayor, spends time in Paris. Pierre, vice‑mayor thanks to Paul, meets her by a lake. After Pierre’s sickly wife Clotilde dies—suicide—he tells Lucienne it wasn’t. Paul pressures Pierre for backing a land deal, then discovers proof of Lucienne’s infidelity.
