Read the complete plot breakdown of Viruman (2022), including all key story events, major twists, and the ending explained in detail. Discover what really happened—and what it all means.

Prakash Raj plays Muniyandi, a narcissistic man from a village in Theni who lives for reputation and money and will go to any length to get what he wants. His sister Dhanam and brother-in-law, Karunas as Balu, are in love with each other, a connection Muniyandi harshly condemns. Dhanam poisons herself and tells Muniyandi that she’ll marry only if he takes her to the hospital, but he abandons her to die and also mistreats his wife. Saranya Ponvannan as Muthulakshmi learns that her husband is having an affair, and Muniyandi tells her to “adjust.” She ultimately burns herself to death, a tragedy witnessed by her young son Viruman. Enraged, Viruman grabs an aruval and rushes after his father into the courthouse. When the court advises him not to kill Muniyandi, Viruman declares that he does not want to live with him and asks that his uncles, Rajkiran as Niraipandiyan Thevar and Karunas as Balu, raise him.

In the present, tension and rivalry intensify between Viruman and his father, unsettling the entire family. Viruman’s brothers — Vasumithra as Selvam, Manoj Bharathiraja as Muthukutty, and Rajkumar as Ilango — each bear the weight of their father’s temper, while Viruman shows respect for them even as he clashes with their opinions. Thenmozhi “Theanu,” Selvam’s sister-in-law, praises Muniyandi because he is her sister’s father-in-law and harbors a disdain for Viruman, even as Viruman himself is drawn to her. The romance between Viruman and Thenmozhi grows in the shadow of this family quarrel, and Thaenu’s feelings begin to shift as she moves from alliance with Muniyandi to a path that could connect her with Viruman. Aditi Shankar plays Thenmozhi.

Selvam needs a job, and when his father refuses to help, Viruman steps in to assist with the help of the MLA, Pathinettaampadiyan, who imposes a condition to sell his mother’s land—a demand Viruman has refused for years but ultimately accepts to secure his brothers’ livelihoods. This act opens the door for Thaenu to start reciprocating Viruman’s feelings, complicating the family dynamics further.

Muniyandi discovers the budding relationship between Thenmozhi and Viruman and begins to turn against Thaenu, disapproval that extends to demanding that Thaenu shoulder the dowry remaining from her sister. At a village panchayat convened for Selvam and Muniyandi, Viruman urges Selvam to break the depend-ence on their father, pushing him toward independence. Selvam chooses to stand on his own feet, a move that enrages Muniyandi, who wants to challenge Viruman, only to be momentarily subdued when Thaenu kisses Viruman, shocking everyone.

Meanwhile, Muthukutty seeks his father’s signature to finalize a restaurant auction, but Muniyandi refuses. His wife suggests asking Viruman for help, and though he hesitates, Viruman eventually agrees. When Muniyandi learns of this, he orders Soonapaana, a village rogue, to derail Muthukutty’s plans. Soonapaana and his gang disrupt the auction, and Viruman, realizing the manipulation, orchestrates a trap to expose Muniyandi’s strategy. Despite the setback, Muthukutty wins the auction, and Soonapaana retaliates by attacking the restaurant staff. Viruman defeats Soonapaana and his gang, leaving them hospitalized and intensifying Muniyandi’s anger.

To sharpen the conflict, Muniyandi’s world expands to Ilango’s relationship with Pathinettaampadiyan’s daughter, and once again Viruman’s family maneuvers are tested. Ilango and Pathinettaampadiyan’s daughter had been dating for four years, and Viruman asks Ilango whether he told their father. Ilango answers no, and Viruman devises a plan in which Ilango should slap Viruman, pleasing their father and presenting Ilango’s relationship openly. Muniyandi agrees to seek Pathinettaampadiyan’s approval, but Pathinettaampadiyan refuses, and Ilango leaves.

The danger deepens as Muniyandi’s brother Kuthalam Thevar and his nephew Sembadayan set a plot to kill Viruman. Sembadayan convinces Viruman that they only need his help to fix a funeral marquee, but a fight breaks out when the truth surfaces. Muniyandi witnesses the clash, and Kuthalam reveals that his real intention was to kill Muniyandi and blame Viruman to secure his brother’s fortune.

Alcohol takes its toll on Muniyandi, who suffers kidney failure and seeks a donor. In a pivotal and selfless moment, Balu donates his own kidney to save him, a gesture that underscores the family ties that remain despite the clashes. After the transplant, Muniyandi visits his wife’s old home, where Soonapaana and his gang attempt to set the place on fire. Viruman arrives just in time to rescue Muniyandi, and the guilt for Muthulakshmi and Dhanam’s deaths weighs heavily on him. Muniyandi apologizes, and Viruman forgives him, leading to a reconciliation that promises a fragile peace within the family.

This sprawling narrative tracks how pride, legacy, and forgiveness braid together across generations, testing loyalties and forcing each character to reckon with the consequences of their choices. It is a story of fallibility, repentance, and the hard-won possibility of rebuilding trust after deep injury.
