Veronica

The film opens with emergency services rushing to a call from a panicked young girl on June 15, 1991. She screams that something is coming to get her brother before the line goes dead. The responders arrive to a chaotic scene and the investigation begins.

Three days earlier, fifteen-year-old Verónica lives in working-class Vallecas with her family after her father's death. Her mother works long hours to support them, and Verónica is left in charge of her younger siblings: Lucia, Irene, and Antoñito. The family balance is fragile, with responsibilities piling on Verónica.

On the day of the 1991 solar eclipse, Verónica's teacher explains how ancient cultures used eclipses to stage human sacrifices and summon dark spirits. The lesson foreshadows the danger of meddling with unseen forces. The mood grows tense as the eclipse looms.

Verónica and her friends Rosa and Diana conduct a séance using a Ouija board in the school basement. The glass cup overheats, and when the eclipse begins, the cup shatters, cutting Verónica's finger and causing her to faint. The moment the session ends, she whispers something and falls silent, hinting at a powerful presence.

Verónica wakes up in the school nurse's office, where the nurse suggests she fainted from iron deficiency. The mundane explanation rings hollow for the girls, who sense something otherworldly has occurred. The haunting's chill begins to spread.

Verónica begins experiencing unsettling paranormal occurrences, and her friends start avoiding her. The sense of a spectral being nearby intensifies, casting doubt on everything she understood. Her social world fractures as fear spreads.

Seeking answers, Verónica returns to the school basement where she meets the elderly blind nun nicknamed Hermana Muerte. The nun explains that a dark spirit has attached itself to Verónica and attempts to drive it away, though she is unsuccessful. The meeting deepens the danger surrounding Verónica.

Verónica creates protective Viking symbols for the siblings, but the demon destroys them. During a terrifying moment, Verónica seems to choke Lucia, only to discover that she herself is choking her sister. The line between victim and aggressor blurs as possession strengthens.

Verónica wakes to find she is on her first period and begins cleaning blood from her mattress. She discovers burn marks on the underside and notices large burn marks shaped like bodies on each child’s mattress. The house fills with the sense of an invisible malevolent force.

Sister Death explains she herself used to see dark spirits as a child and blinded herself to stop them. Verónica reads in an occult magazine that the way to banish spirits is to say goodbye and to right the wrongs that led to the attachment. The danger feels more personal than ever.

Verónica asks Rosa and Diana to join another séance to force the spirit to leave. The friends refuse, leaving Verónica to consider a risky solo path. The threat looms larger as fear and stubbornness collide.

Desperate, Verónica conducts a séance with her siblings, with Antoñito drawing protective symbols that are miscopied as invocation symbols. They sing a repeated melody and settle on a familiar advertising jingle for Centella as their guide. The spirit resists saying goodbye, and danger escalates.

During the event, Verónica tries to call the police and flee with Antoñito, only to discover he is not in her grasp. She glimpses the demon in a mirror and realizes she has been possessed. She attempts to slit her own throat to end the possession, but the demon prevents it as invisible forces attack them and the police arrive.

The medics carry Verónica and Antoñito out as a detective witnesses the sinister events. The police report notes unexplained paranormal activity at the house and reveals Verónica has died. The film closes by hinting that the events were based on Spain’s first police report documenting paranormal activity.
