Raghuvaran, Dhanush, is a civil engineering graduate who has been unemployed for four years. He remains stubborn about taking any job outside his field, which puts him at odds with his father, Samuthirakani Krishnamoorthy, who views him as irresponsible. Raghuvaran’s younger brother, Hrishikesh Karthik, works for an IT company and earns well, a fact that earns the father’s quiet approval, while Raghuvaran’s mother, Saranya Ponvannan Bhuvana, offers steadfast support to her son. Raghuvaran’s life begins to tilt toward romance when he falls for his neighbour’s daughter, Shalini, Amala Paul. Shalini initially despises him, but after hearing about the difficulties Raghuvaran faces, she warms up to him and the two eventually fall into a mutual romance.

One day, with his father and Karthik away, Raghuvaran is asked to look after his mother, who has a heart condition. He ends up going out on a date with Shalini, and despite her pleas, he keeps ignoring his mother’s repeated phone calls. When he returns home, he discovers that his mother has died of a heart attack. This loss sends Raghuvaran into guilt and depression, coloring his life with a heavy sense of responsibility he had neglected. In a parallel thread of the story, Bhuvana’s lungs are transplanted into Anitha, a chain smoker who developed lung cancer. Anitha is the daughter of Ramkumar, the chairman of a civil engineering company in Chennai, who later offers Raghuvaran a job as a token of gratitude for saving his daughter’s life. Raghuvaran accepts the position but requests Anitha to stop smoking, a condition she agrees to honor.

Six months pass, and Raghuvaran is assigned to a government project to construct high-rise flats intended to re-house people from a nearby slum. He is supported by Azhagusundaram, Vivek and Manickam, Cell Murugan, who are appointed as his assistants. Raghuvaran soon wins the contract from the government and dives into the work with determination and focus, setting the project in motion.

However, Arun Subramaniam, a young businessman who has taken over his father’s Chennai branch, bids for the same contract using questionable methods. Amitash Pradhan Arun is furious at losing the land and intensifies his efforts to disrupt Raghuvaran’s progress. The conflict escalates when Arun hires rowdies to attack Raghuvaran’s workers at the construction site. Several workers are injured and end up hospitalized, prompting Raghuvaran to confront Arun at his office. With a microspy camera recording, Raghuvaran forces Arun to admit his role and warns that he will reveal the video if Arun does not apologize. Fearing reputational damage, Arun’s father Venkat arranges for his son to apologize at the hospital. Raghuvaran accepts the apology and the project continues, reaching completion within ten months.

On the day of the flats’ inauguration, Arun and a gang ambush Raghuvaran while he is traveling to the site. Raghuvaran manages to outwit them and, in a surprising turn, chooses to spare Arun, expressing that he has no desire to feud but instead wishes to become friends. He then escorts Arun to the site, where the state public works minister and Anitha jointly inaugurate the completed flats.
