Velu was framed because Inspector Kumaravel blackmailed him. To close the case, Kumaravel pressured Velu into confessing as the accused, threatening that otherwise Jyothi would receive no help or relief for her injuries. Velu reluctantly agreed to protect Jyothi, leading to his imprisonment.

Earlier, Velu is shown watching Jyothi daily at the apartment building, establishing his deep feelings for her that would make him vulnerable to such manipulation.

Jyothi threw acid on Kumaravel after discovering that Velu had been framed to protect her.
