Mysterious package arrives at the inn

Allan Gray arrives at an inn near Courtempierre and rents a room for the night. An old man slips a small rectangular package onto the table with the note 'To be opened upon my death.' Drawn by curiosity, Gray takes the package and leaves the inn to begin investigating.

Shadows lead to the disused factory

Gray trails the shadow of a peg-legged soldier to a disused factory, where he witnesses the shadow reunite with its body and other shadows dancing. An old woman who seems to command the shadows watches him, while an old man with a mustache points toward a door. He steps into the dim space, unsettled by what he sees.

The manor and the murder unfold

The shadows lead Gray to a manor where he looks through a window and sees the lord of the manor—the man who gave him the package—being shot by the shadow of the soldier. He signals an old servant who tries to rouse others, but they arrive too late. The lord dies as Giséle, the manor's younger daughter, is present and Léone lies gravely ill in bed.

Aftermath and hospitality

A coachman is sent to fetch the police while the old servant's wife invites Gray to stay the night. Giséle is shown grieving, and Léone remains bedridden, cared for by the manor's staff. Gray contemplates the eerie events unfolding around the estate.

The vampire book revealed

In the library, Gray opens the package and finds a book about horrific demons called vampires. As he reads about bloodsuckers who gain control over the living and the dead, Giséle notes Léone walking outside. They catch a glimpse of the old woman from the factory bent over Léone's unconscious body before she slips away.

Bite marks and the coachman's fate

The carriage returns, but the coachman is dead. The village doctor visits Léone, and Gray recognizes him as the old man with the mustache from the factory. The doctor says Léone needs a blood transfusion, and Gray volunteers to donate.

Exhausted from blood loss, Gray falls asleep. Meanwhile, the old servant reads the book and learns that a vampire can be defeated by opening its grave at dawn and driving an iron bar through its heart. He also uncovers rumors that a vampire was behind a previous epidemic in Courtempierre, with Marguerite Chopin named as the prime suspect.

The danger nears Léone

Gray wakes with a sense of danger and rushes to Léone's bedside to stop her from drinking poison brought by the old woman. The doctor flees, kidnapping Giséle, and Gray follows. Outside the factory, Gray experiences an out-of-body journey in which he sees himself dead and sealed in a coffin before his spirit returns to his body.

Grave discovery and the vampire destroyed

Gray and the old servant go to Marguerite Chopin's grave and discover the old woman perfectly preserved there. They hammer a large iron bar through her heart, and she becomes a skeleton, lifting the curse. Back at the manor, Léone suddenly recovers.

Ghostly intervention and pursuit

The ghost of the lord of the manor appears to the doctor, causing him to flee, while the soldier falls to his death down a flight of stairs. Using the information gained from his out-of-body experience, Gray finds and frees Giséle.

The mill trap seals the doctor

The old servant, seemingly aided by an unseen force, locks the doctor in a chamber of an old mill and fills the space with flour, suffocating him. Giséle and Gray then cross a foggy river by boat toward a bright clearing.

Giséle and Gray cross a foggy river in a boat and reach a bright clearing, leaving the peril behind. The journey marks a turning point toward safety and a hopeful future. The lingering shadows of Courtempierre gradually recede as they begin anew.

A hopeful dawn

With the threat vanquished, Gray and Giséle step into a new dawn, leaving the darkness of the night behind. The village slowly begins to heal as the immediate danger subsides. The film closes on a note of cautious optimism and a future free of the vampire's curse.
