Vetrivel was framed by the DGP himself during the governor's visit to Tanjore. When CBCID warned about an assassination attempt, Vetrivel, due to his IPS training and sharpshooting skills, was assigned to protect the governor. However, during the meeting, the governor was killed, and the DGP used the opportunity to pin the murder on Vetrivel, turning the hero into a fugitive.
Earlier, Vetrivel's successful career and confrontations with Naachiyaar had made him a threat to powerful figures in the system.
After being framed for the governor's murder, Vetrivel (who was once a highly accomplished district collector) had to go into hiding. He abandoned his position and lived under the alias Singamuthu, working as a temporary driver for Annamalai Transports in Rishikesh to survive while evading capture.
Singamuthu hints at a hidden past to Anjali early in their interactions.
The feud began when Naachiyaar's son abducted the sister of one of Vetrivel's friends, who was engaged to another man, and attempted to assault her. Vetrivel intervened to rescue the girl, which resulted in him injuring Naachiyaar's son so severely that the son died in the hospital. This act of protecting the vulnerable woman made Naachiyaar seek brutal revenge.
The kidnapping and assault setup the entire cycle of violence that defines Vetrivel's past.
When Vetrivel confronted Naachiyaar's son during the abduction, he disabled the son's reproductive capacity in the fight. The son was taken to the hospital where he later died from his injuries. This death became the catalyst for Naachiyaar's vengeful campaign against Vetrivel and his circle.
The brutal nature of the rescue foreshadows the equally brutal retaliation that follows.
Vetrivel was assigned this duty because he had previously trained as an IPS officer and was known to be an excellent shooter. When CBCID warned about a planned assassination during the governor's visit to Tanjore, Vetrivel's skills made him the obvious choice for protection. However, this assignment ultimately led to his framing.
Vetrivel's law enforcement background and marksmanship are revealed early as defining traits.
Anjali is characterized as ardently admiring the legendary Tamil actor MGR and believes her husband should emulate MGR's ideals. This devotion is a key character trait that defines her romantic expectations and shapes her attraction to Singamuthu, whom she hopes embodies those same virtues.
Anjali's admiration of MGR sets the tone for what she seeks in a partner.
In the present timeline, Singamuthu actively intervenes to stop Annamalai's attempts to arrange a marriage for himself. This protective stance toward Annamalai's family demonstrates Singamuthu's loyalty and stake in their wellbeing, even as he himself plans to reveal his true identity and past.
Singamuthu's interference in Annamalai's personal life hints at his deeper connection to the household.
The film follows Vetrivel's quest to clear his name after being wrongly accused of killing the governor. Through his perseverance and investigation, he successfully proves his innocence, restores his reputation as a collector, and returns to his rightful position in the system.
The framing by the DGP sets up the central mystery that drives the second half of the film.
After Vetrivel caused the death of Naachiyaar's son (by injuring him during the rescue of the kidnapped girl), Naachiyaar sought brutal revenge by killing one of Vetrivel's friends. This escalating cycle of violence was meant to inflict the same pain Vetrivel had caused him.
The friend's murder deepens the conflict and raises the stakes for Vetrivel.
Anjali is drawn to Singamuthu due to his charisma and the connection that forms when she visits Rishikesh to inspect the building and collect rent. As their paths cross, she begins to develop feelings for him, and Singamuthu also reciprocates, eventually revealing his true identity as Vetrivel.
Singamuthu hints at his hidden past early in their interactions, sparking curiosity.
The film uses a two-part structure with a lighthearted first half set in Rishikesh where Singamuthu works as a driver and meets Anjali. The second half reveals his past in Tanjore through a flashback, showing how he became a fugitive after being framed. The connection is that Singamuthu and Vetrivel are the same person, the present-day driver is the former collector trying to clear his name.
Singamuthu's hints about his hidden past foreshadow the reveal of his dual identity.
