Set on a bleak prison farm, a convicted racketeer is handed a firearm and promised a pardon if he uses it. After he persuades a fellow inmate to escape, that escapee is killed, prompting the racketeer’s appointment as prison trustee and forcing him to navigate a fraught balance between survival, authority, and the lingering promise of freedom.
