Set in San Francisco, Daniel Chang is a twenty-something, second-generation Chinese-American who shares a home with his widowed mother, Mrs. Chang, and his grandmother, Gram Chang. Since his father’s death, he runs the family business and tends to his mother, all while quietly keeping his private life separate from his family’s expectations. As a gay man, he resists the traditional path of marriage and children, trying to keep his “home life” and his homo life separate. He never directly tells his mother that he is gay, and her persistent matchmaking creates a running, humorous tension. To shield himself, Daniel relies on his friend Michelle, who pretends to be his steady girlfriend for a price, giving him a needed buffer against another round of dating pressure.

The house’s basement doubles as a rental space, a side hustle for Mrs. Chang beyond her Mahjong games. Daniel hopes to keep things quiet, but the situation shifts when Robert, a young man from Indiana, moves in as the new tenant. Daniel’s admiration quickly blossoms into a crush. A plumbing mishap floods the basement with raw sewage, forcing Robert into the only other available bedroom—Daniel’s room. The boundary between fantasy and reality blurs as Daniel tries to maintain his composure, eventually ceding the living room sofa to sleep, and later sharing his bed with Robert after his mother boots him off the couch for late-night TV. What starts as prudish restraint gradually gives way to genuine affection as the two men become lovers.

Daniel’s fear of being discovered frames every moment they share, and he longs for the basement repairs to finish so their romance can unfold in a safer, more private space. But trouble arrives when a San Francisco building inspector visits, delivering a list of expensive upgrades required to legally rent the room. Daniel suspects his mother is behind the visit, and Mrs. Chang quickly argues that Robert must move out to avoid legal trouble. Heartbreak follows as Robert relocates to a friend’s place in Pasadena.

Facing a crossroads, Daniel decides to come out when his mother again presses for a conventional match. Her reaction is fierce, yet she seeks counsel from Robert’s mother, who suggests a provocative path: perhaps another “son” isn’t a betrayal after all. The story builds toward a pivotal moment when Mrs. Chang invites Robert to be part of the family, signaling a potential acceptance that transcends cultural expectations. The culmination arrives as Daniel bursts into the house and sees Robert approaching, a moment that confirms the family’s new, inclusive direction.
