Two Too Young

During penmanship class, Alfalfa writes a note to Spanky informing him that Buckwheat and Porky have firecrackers and that Spanky should think of a way to relieve them of their possessions. He passes the note to Spanky via a paper airplane, starting the plan. The note hints at the goal: secure the firecrackers before recess.

When recess begins, Spanky and Alfalfa confront Buckwheat and Porky by the door and propose trading a magnifying glass and a water pistol for the firecrackers. Buckwheat and Porky refuse the trade, prompting the next step of the plan. The scheme moves forward as they prepare to obtain the firecrackers anyway.

The duo sneaks into the janitor's office to borrow clothing and disguise themselves as adults. Spanky climbs onto Alfalfa's shoulders to appear taller, and Alfalfa's cowlick is shaved off to double as a mustache. Alfalfa groans, lamenting the loss of his trademark.

In their make-believe G-man disguise, Spanky and Alfalfa manage to extract the firecrackers from Buckwheat. The deception works long enough for them to secure the stash, though the ruse remains risky. They prepare to leave with their loot.

The disguise is compromised, and Spanky discards it. He then tries to light the firecrackers with his magnifying glass, hoping to trigger them and create a distraction to escape. The plan spirals as the real consequences begin to loom.

Buckwheat rings the teacher's bell, ending recess and forcing everyone back inside. In the scramble, Spanky stuffs the firecrackers into Alfalfa's back pocket for safekeeping, while Porky picks up Spanky's magnifying glass.

Back in class, Miss Lawrence asks the children to recite their pieces. Alfalfa is the only student willing to perform, rising to recite The Charge of the Light Brigade. He reveals the firecrackers in his back pocket as he takes the stage.

During the recitation, Porky uses the magnifying glass to focus sunlight on Alfalfa's pocket, triggering the firecrackers. The sudden explosion turns the moment into chaos. Alfalfa's performance is transformed from solemn to painful.

The firecrackers ignite in Alfalfa's pocket, setting his backside on fire as he speaks the poem. He runs around the classroom with smoke and flames trailing him, eliciting shocked and then laughing responses from the students. He escapes outside to continue the ordeal.

Alfalfa dumps himself into a washtub of cold water to extinguish the flames. Steam erupts from the water as the heat meets the cold, and he quivers with relief. He stares, mouth open, as the situation gradually calms.

With the flames extinguished, the class stares in stunned silence before breaking into laughter at Alfalfa's misfortune. The moment lingers as the sounds of splashing fade, highlighting the blend of relief and humiliation. The scene captures a memorable, embarrassing triumph for the moment.

The scene closes with the class still laughing and the screen fading to black. The mishap leaves Alfalfa humiliated but also a lasting, comic memory for the gang.
