What Happens in Two Distant Strangers: Full Plot Summary

The whole story of Two Distant Strangers (2020) explained, from the opening scene to the final frame: every key event, every twist and what it all adds up to. Read it as a quick recap before the sequel, to check a scene you missed, or to finally understand what really happened.

In New York City, Carter James — a graphic designer returning home to his dog Jeter after a first date — finds himself trapped in a time loop. On each morning, he is confronted on the street by a NYPD officer, Officer Merk, who suspects him of smoking a joint and wants to search his bag. Each encounter ends with Carter being killed by the police, then waking up in the bed of his date, Perri. In one version of the loop, riot police burst into Perri's apartment, mistaking it for another and shoot him there.

After 99 deaths, Carter decides to discuss the situation with Merk. Carter tells him about the time loop, offering Merk evidence by correctly predicting what people around them will do next. Carter asks Merk to drive him home. The journey ends without mishap; Merk and Carter get out of the patrol car and shake hands. But as Carter turns to enter his apartment building, Merk starts applauding what he calls Carter's “noble performance”, revealing that Merk remembers the previous loops too. Merk then shoots him in the back, while a pool of blood starts forming in the shape of Africa, and says

> See you tomorrow, kid

Carter wakes up once more in Perri's bed.

Undeterred, Carter leaves Perri's apartment to make yet another effort to get home. As the song The Way It Is plays, names of Black Americans who have died in encounters with police are listed.

Two Distant Strangers Plot Explained: Your Questions Answered

The questions people ask most about Two Distant Strangers (2020): what happens in the confusing scenes, why the characters do what they do, the twists, hidden details and what the ending means. Each answer contains spoilers.

Q1

Why is Carter stuck in the time loop?

Carter becomes trapped in the time loop after being killed by NYPD Officer Merk during a confrontation on the street. Each time he dies, he wakes up back in Perri's bed, reliving the same morning. The loop appears to be triggered by his death at the hands of police, resetting him to the beginning of the day whenever he is killed.

Q2

Why does Carter wake up in Perri's bed every time?

Carter wakes up in Perri's bed because that was where he originally started his morning after their first date. The time loop always resets him to the exact same starting point: the morning after his date, in Perri's apartment, before he attempts to navigate the streets to get home to his dog Jeter.

Foreshadowing: The film establishes Perri's apartment as Carter's starting point from the very first scene.

Q3

Why does Officer Merk reveal he remembers the previous loops?

Officer Merk reveals he has been aware of the time loops all along, referring to Carter's repeated attempts as a "noble performance." This twist implies that Merk is also trapped in the loop or has some awareness of it. His seemingly cooperative behavior during the car ride was actually manipulation, designed to gain Carter's trust before killing him again.

Foreshadowing: Merk's unusual willingness to listen to Carter's explanation about the loop hints at his deeper knowledge.

Q4

What does the blood forming in the shape of Africa represent?

When Merk shoots Carter in the back, a pool of blood forms on the ground in the shape of Africa. This visual imagery is a powerful symbol connecting Carter's individual tragedy to the broader history of violence against Black people on the African continent and in the diaspora. It reinforces the film's themes about systemic racism and the historical persecution of Black individuals.

Q5

Why do riot police raid Perri's apartment?

In one iteration of the loop, riot police burst into Perri's apartment because they mistook it for a different unit. The door number was hanging upside down, causing the police to target the wrong apartment. This results in Carter being shot amid the chaos, demonstrating how police violence can occur through confusion and institutional failure.

Q6

Does Carter ever escape the time loop?

The film ends with Carter still trapped in the loop. Despite his efforts, including attempting to reason with Merk and trying to reach home, the cycle continues. He wakes up once more in Perri's bed and resumes his journey, leaving the outcome unresolved. The final montage suggests the loop will persist indefinitely, reinforcing the film's bleak message about systemic racism.

Q7

What is the significance of the names listed at the end of the film?

As the song "The Way It Is" plays, the film displays names of Black Americans who have died in real encounters with police. This montage transforms Carter's fictional story into a memorial for real victims of police violence, grounding the narrative in actual historical trauma. It elevates the film from a personal thriller to a commentary on ongoing systemic injustice.

Q8

Why does Merk shoot Carter after they shake hands?

After Carter and Merk shake hands and the car ride appears to end safely, Merk applauds what he calls Carter's "noble performance" and shoots him in the back. This reveals that Merk was never genuinely helping Carter, he was manipulating him into a false sense of security. Merk's statement "see you tomorrow, kid" confirms he knows about and enjoys the loop, making his betrayal even more calculated and cruel.

Foreshadowing: Merk's sudden change from cooperative to hostile echoes his initial aggressive demeanor during the street confrontations.

Q9

Why is Carter so desperate to get home to his dog Jeter?

Carter's desperate attempt to reach home is driven by his love for his dog Jeter, who is alone and waiting for him. Jeter represents normalcy, safety, and the life Carter is trying to return to, a life outside the cycle of violence. The dog serves as a symbol of what Carter stands to lose and what motivates his repeated attempts to escape the loop.

Q10

Why do the police kill Carter in every loop?

The police kill Carter because Officer Merk initiates a confrontation, accusing Carter of smoking a joint and demanding to search his bag. Carter's attempts to assert his rights or flee escalate the situation, leading to the officers perceiving him as a threat. This reflects the film's commentary on racial profiling and how police interactions can quickly become fatal for Black men, regardless of the actual circumstances.
