Vera went to Maxim's apartment because he tricked her with a false note claiming his health was worsening and asking her to return to help him. Trusting that her charitable connection was genuine, she went alone, only to be assaulted. Maxim lured Vera to his apartment under false pretenses and raped her. After the assault, Maxim passed out from alcohol, giving Vera the chance to escape. In her terrified state, she grabbed a weapon and killed him in self-defense, a desperate act that marks the film's most violent and traumatic sequence.

When Vera kisses Dolskij, she experiences a traumatic flashback seeing the face of the man who assaulted her instead of her lover. Despite failing initially, he persisted because his emotional connection to her remained unbroken, driving him to the opera in a final attempt at reconciliation.

Vera refused Dolskij's plea for forgiveness because she had already moved on emotionally. She told him it was too late and that she no longer loved him. Having rebuilt her life as a successful actress abroad, she viewed their past as irreversibly damaged and chose not to return to a relationship defined by trauma and heartbreak.

Dolskij killed himself because Vera's final rejection destroyed his last hope. After years of searching and believing their love could be restored, her decisive refusal left him in unbearable despair. The weight of losing her, combined with his long-term emotional decline, leads him to end his life, a tragic conclusion to a love story consumed by the shadow of Vera's past.
