Truth or Dare

Olivia Barron, a college student who always puts others first, plans to spend spring break building houses with Habitat for Humanity. Her best friend Markie Cameron convinces her to join their group on a trip to Mexico instead. The choice sets the stage for a dangerous supernatural game that will force them to confront secrets and fear.

After arriving in Mexico, the friends stop at a bar where Carter lures them to party at an abandoned church. The invitation marks the turning point, as the group enters a place with a dark history. Carter hints at consequences if they refuse to play along.

In the church, Carter explains that this is a supernatural version of truth or dare and warns they must complete each dare or be killed. The group begins the game, feeling a chill as the rules take hold. The stakes are immediately deadly when fear becomes a weapon.

During Tyson’s turn, the deceitful lie triggers a fatal consequence. He disbelieves the game’s threats and dies as a result of the dare. The group realizes the game will kill unless they follow its rules.

Back at campus, Olivia must confront a truth about her friends when she blurts out Markie’s serial infidelity. Lucas, who has kept his own feelings hidden, admits to caring for Olivia. The revelation deepens the emotional stakes for the group.

During subsequent dares, Markie is forced to break Olivia’s hand, and their closeted friend Brad Chang is compelled to tell his father he is gay. The dares push each person to reveal painful truths about themselves. The fear of the game grows as more personal corners are exposed.

They learn of Giselle Hammond, a former friend who lit a woman on fire in Mexico, and realize a sinister history behind the game. Through social media, they uncover a trail that connects Giselle to the church tragedy. The mystery expands beyond their friend circle.

Giselle reveals that one of her friends, Sam Meehan, got drunk and trashed the church, and when they returned home the game continued. Only Giselle and Carter survived the chaos, and Carter is later revealed to have been told to involve more players to gain time. The deception leaves the group rattled and paranoid.

Giselle attempts to shoot Olivia, but Penelope Amari dives in and dies instead. With the dare failed, Giselle is forced to kill herself. The survivors are left to process another killer within their circle.

Olivia and Lucas have sex, and Lucas admits he cares about her but loves Markie. They drive to Tijuana and meet Inez Reyes, a former nun who cannot speak. By writing on paper, Inez explains Calux’s origin and how he has fed on truth or dare players.

Inez reveals that she summoned a demon named Calux to escape abuse, but the ritual unleashed a deadly game. Calux continued the truth-or-dare cycle and killed her friends. She also describes how she cut off the demon’s tongue and sealed it, hoping to trap him.

Brad is dared to threaten his father with a gun, drawing the attention of an approaching officer who shoots him. The death underscores the real danger the game imposes on everyone. The group mourns and realizes the stakes are higher than they anticipated.

Olivia learns that Carter and Sam are the same person, triggering new distrust. She musters the courage to tell the group a devastating truth: Markie’s father sexually assaulted her, and his suicide followed after she warned him about Markie. The confession complicates loyalties and forgiveness becomes a central theme.

They find Sam and force him back to the ruined church, where Sam undergoes the ritual to trap Calux. Lucas is dared to kill Olivia or Markie, but Calux possesses him and compels him to kill Sam and himself. When Markie’s turn comes, Olivia urges her to refuse a dare, but Calux possesses Markie anyway, exposing the impossibility of escaping the game.

Olivia turns the tables by forcing Calux to pick truth or dare, and the demon is forced to admit there is no way out with Sam dead unless more people are drawn in. She uploads a video warning viewers about the game and its rules, then uses truth or dare to pull in anyone who hears the phrase. The cycle continues, delaying their inevitable end.
