Mack “Truck” Turner Isaac Hayes is a former professional football player who becomes a Los Angeles–based bounty hunter after an injury. When he visits his girlfriend, Annie Annazette Chase, who is in jail and hopes to leave the city once she’s released, Truck finds his path tangled with danger and loyalty. He and his partner Jerry Barnes set out to collect a bounty from Nate Dinwiddie, a bail bondsman who then points them toward Fogarty Dick Miller, another bail bondsman who knows a pimp who skipped bail named Gator.
The duo’s hunt leads them to Dorinda Nichelle Nichols, a formidable madam who runs Gator’s stable of prostitutes. Truck and Jerry stake out Gator’s movements, only to watch him slip away at a crucial moment. A tip from Truck’s ally Duke Scatman Crothers helps them close in on Gator again, and they end up killing him when he tries to shoot Truck. Dorinda hardens her grip on the business, threatening Gator’s former workers to keep order, and she offers a brutal deal to rival pimps: those who kill Truck will take over Gator’s operation as she keeps the money rolling.
Harvard Blue Yaphet Kotto, a ruthless pimp, becomes the primary challenger. After agreeing to share the cost of eliminating Truck, Blue’s gang escalates the violence, taking aim at Truck through a coordinated ambush. Nate is forced to call Truck with a “big job” offer, a message that arrives at a moment when Truck isn’t in top shape after a night of partying. The trap grows sharper when Jerry is killed in Blue’s ambush, and Nate warns Truck of the danger looming over him.
In a desperate bid to survive, Truck frames Annie for shoplifting, sending her to jail as a pawn in the game. He visits Nate again at the hospital, handing over Jerry’s gun for protection, and the two men fire back as Blue’s goons burst in. Blue himself manages to flee, but Truck shoots him down—Blue dies soon after in the driver’s seat of his car. The violence culminates when Truck confronts Dorinda at her house, and he kills her as she reaches for a gun.
With the immediate danger behind him, Truck is reunited with Annie as she is released from custody. The couple collects what remains of Truck’s life and prepares to start over, loading his belongings into a car. He tells Annie that he’ll leave town with her right away if she’ll take him back, and they drive off together, leaving Los Angeles for good.
