Oscar Pettinari is rejected as an extra for an American sci-fi movie, leaving him humiliated and desperate. He loudly boasts about his supposed stunt experience to bystanders to salvage his pride. This setback foreshadows the reckless plan he will undertake with the lawyer.

In Selci, Rome, Oscar meets Giangiacomo Pigna Corelli, a whimsical and self-assured lawyer who immediately impresses him. Giangiacomo proposes a scheme to stage a fake incident to extort money or win an acting role. The encounter marks the start of a risky manipulation that will pull Oscar into dangerous waters.

They decide to stage a fake car crash and pretend to be the victims to pressure the producer. The goal is to extract damages or secure a chance as an actor, exploiting the risk of scandal. The plan shows how far Oscar is willing to go for fame.

On the appointed day, Nancy—rather than the producer—drives the car. The lead actress is dismissed and abandoned by the production due to fear of scandal. Nancy must face a strange country and withstand pressure, while Oscar and Giangiacomo press for evidence, even encouraging extreme measures such as surgery to strengthen their case.

Oscar offers Nancy hospitality at his home and goes into debt to sustain her lavish lifestyle. He tries to help her navigate life in a foreign country, hoping to keep her close. His generosity contrasts with the greed of their scheme.

As they spend time together, a mutual understanding grows and perhaps attraction develops. Nancy begins to see a kinder, if flawed, side of Oscar beyond his bravado. Oscar's perspective softens as he pursues a life he once boasted about.

Giangiacomo's quirks intensify as he rejects a favorable settlement and pushes the case toward court. He stages an increasingly public persona, punctuated by a fervent nationalist harangue that reveals his delusions. The con moves toward a chaotic peak.

During the public harangue, Giangiacomo faints and becomes amnesiac, unable to recall what has happened. The event throws the scam into disarray and exposes his fragility. Oscar and Nancy watch the illusion crumble.

In the aftermath, it becomes clear that Giangiacomo is a mythomaniac who has reinvented himself as various kinds of experts. His mother and aunt shelter him, showing little awareness of the consequences of his escapades. The revelation shakes Oscar's trust in the entire scheme.

Oscar tries to coax Giangiacomo to remember his promises, but the efforts fail and he ultimately gives up. He resigns himself to the reality that the scam cannot be salvaged. The focus shifts away from the con and toward Nancy's future.

Nancy finds another chance for a serious acting career in the United States and leaves Oscar without hatred. The departure marks her maturation after the chaotic romance and the failed con. Her exit closes the chapter on the scam.

Back in Rome, Oscar resumes his habit of spinning heroic stuntman tales and auditioning at Cinecittà. He remains a dreamer, now a copycat of Indiana Jones, trying to salvage his ego with stories of danger and glory. The film ends with him chasing roles while clinging to his legends.
