Il Mistero di Bellavista

While attempting to observe Halley's Comet with a telescope from Professor Bellavista's terrace, Salvatore and Saverio mistakenly aim the telescope at a window in the opposite building. From this angle, they become convinced they are watching Mrs. Jolanda being murdered, though their observation is actually a misinterpretation of what they see.

Mrs. Jolanda is a second-hand clothing dealer who becomes the center of the supposed murder investigation. She is the woman Salvatore and Saverio believe they have witnessed being killed. However, she is never actually found dead, her sudden disappearance triggers the entire comic investigation.

When the group investigates the suspect apartment, they find it empty with no body present. The mistress of the apartment, a fur trafficker's associate, is missing. However, they discover ragù left cooking on the stove, suggesting someone departed in a hurry rather than being harmed.

Frank Amodio is an Italian-American furrier and shady trafficker who is revealed to be the lover of the missing lady. He becomes a crucial link in the investigation, connecting the investigators to the underground dealings of the neighborhood and helping unravel part of the tangled web surrounding the disappearance.

Two elderly sisters in the neighborhood are facing eviction. To avoid being forced out of their home, they pretend to have a crazy nephew living with them. This elaborate ruse is one of the quirky subplots the investigators uncover while searching for answers about the missing lady.

An aging noble art expert and his wife stage elaborate dramatic scenes to sell fake paintings as valuable works. Their scheme involves tricking buyers into believing forgeries are authentic masterpieces, an art fraud that the investigators discover during their covert probe of the neighborhood's eccentric residents.

Bellavista's son-in-law, who previously emigrated to Northern Italy, finds a buyer for a nuclear shelter through his connections. This subplot injects a darkly practical note into the comedic investigation and shows how the mystery ties into broader local business schemes and opportunism.

The investigation reveals that the missing lady never actually died, she simply left suddenly. The presumed murder was based entirely on a misinterpretation of what Salvatore and Saverio saw through the telescope. There was no crime, only a sudden departure that fueled the comic misunderstanding.
