Jotun awakens because Nora sings a song taught to her by her father Tobias. The song is connected to the ancient connection between humans and trolls from the time when they lived in harmony. When Nora sings it near the hibernating Jotun, the troll recognizes the melody and wakes up, breaking free from his captivity.

Nora lives in isolation because she stepped away from her job studying trolls for the Norwegian government three years after her encounter with the Troll King. The traumatic experience led her to retire from her academic work and live a quiet life in a remote cabin, though she eventually returns when a new threat emerges.

After Jotun escapes and attacks a ski resort killing civilians, Prime Minister Brichmann orders the troll to be killed rather than captured.
