The tale follows Rauten, a wizard elk who is actually a human transformed into an animal. His story opens in the Ré Valley, a yawning gap between mountains, a long flat basin lined with dark forests that seem to hold night’s shadows. A sluggish river winds through light‑red sand, flowing unusually northward across the Norwegian landscape.
