The hypnotic Svengali can command the young starlet’s singing voice, but he cannot dominate her heart. Maurice Tourneur’s 1915 silent picture adapts George du Maurier’s novel, showing the clash of control and affection. A better‑known 1931 version, retitled Svengali and starring John Barrymore, changed the title to emphasize its big star.
