Svengali hypnotically seizes control of a young starlet’s singing voice, yet he cannot dominate her heart. Maurice Tourneur’s 1915 adaptation brings George du Maurier’s celebrated novel to the screen. A later, more widely known 1931 sound version titled Svengali stars John Barrymore, whose star power prompted the change in title. still truly praised.
