Mike Brannan, Clark Gable, is a fearless racing driver known for doing whatever it takes to win, and his ruthless drive is matched only by the pressure of fame. Barbara Stanwyck as Regina Forbes, a powerful nationwide columnist, decides to interview him just before a race and quickly grows irritated by his brusque manner. At the Newark track, the two spar for the lead as a dramatic sequence unfolds: a car they are about to lap crashes in front of them, and Mike chooses to thread the inside, forcing his rival to try the outside. The maneuver triggers a three-car wreck in which Joe Youghal is killed, and Regina, in the wake of the tragedy, writes a column that paints Mike as responsible for Joe’s death and dredges up a previous fatal incident involving him. Nervous circuit managers, eager to shield racing from bad publicity, ban him from competition and force him to abandon his midget car.

With his racing career derailed, Mike must pivot, selling his midget car and shifting into a high-wire life as a stunt driver. He joins Joie Chitwood, performing dangerous feats at auto circuses for $100 a show. Adolphe Menjou, who plays Regina’s editor, Gregg, keeps her informed about Mike’s new life, and her interest in him rekindles. She travels to see how he’s faring and hears that he’s saving up enough money to buy a Championship car of his own, a path that could let him enter the big leagues where Regina’s influence won’t reach him. The two enter a complicated romance: she provokes him into first slapping her, then kissing her, and soon their relationship deepens despite the rocky dynamics between ambition, betrayal, and affection.

As Mike proves consistently successful on the track, finishing in the money again and again, Regina’s outlook shifts. A corrupt businessman she has pursued is convicted and, facing a long prison sentence, commits suicide instead of awaiting justice. In that moment, Regina sees a mirror of Mike’s own ruthlessness and begins to understand him more fully, even as she wrestles with doubts about whether his recklessness on the road ever caused a fatality. The emotional tension between them intensifies as she grapples with her doubts and her growing love for him.

Brannan earns a coveted spot in the Indianapolis 500 at the storied Indianapolis Motor Speedway. During the race, a moment reminiscent of Newark reappears: he signals a rival to take a narrow gap, and he attempts to skirt the wreck by venturing onto the grass. The mishap sends his car flipping and tumbling, and he is rushed to the hospital with only minor injuries. Regina races to the track hospital, where she sees him recovering and, in a powerful culmination, tells him she’s proud of him and confesses her love. In the quiet aftermath, the couple faces the future—two people shaped by risk, fame, and a shared longing for trust, truth, and affection.
