On Chinese New Year in 1938, Crystal Shackleford lures two strangers—Jerome K. Arbutny, a cautious solicitor, and Johnny West, a charming but troubled drunkard—into her London flat with a strange belief: if three strangers silently share the same wish before an idol of the Chinese goddess Kwan Yin, fortune will tilt their way. They weigh the idea of pooling their money into a sweepstakes ticket for the Grand National, agreeing not to sell the ticket if it’s drawn, but to hold onto it until the race unfolds. Each hopes the windfall will bend their fate toward a dream: Crystal wants money to win back a husband she’s pushing away, Arbutny wants to smooth his path to the venerable Barrister’s Club, and Johnny dreams of buying and running a bar where he can call the shots.
The film then unfurls the tangled backstories of the three strangers. Crystal’s husband David Shackleford has moved to Canada, fallen for another woman, Janet Elliott, and finally returns with a demand for a divorce. Crystal refuses, sabotages his career by engineering a poor promotion, and spins a lie to Janet, telling her that David still loves her and that she is pregnant. Trusting Crystal’s manipulation, Janet returns to Canada, leaving Crystal to face the consequences of her scheming.
Johnny’s tale centers on an earlier botched robbery that turned deadly for a policeman. With the help of an adoring confidante, Icey Crane, Johnny evades capture for a time, while Icey perjures herself to help Bertram Fallon, the true ringleader, evade justice. A second witness is discredited, and Fallon shifts the blame for the murder onto West and another accomplice, Timothy “Gabby” Delaney. Johnny is arrested and sentenced to death, yet Gabby later confronts Fallon as he heads to prison and stabs him. Fallon dies in a railway carriage, and his dying confession, paradoxically, clears Johnny of the murder charge.
Arbutny’s sequence of bad luck involves a reckless flirtation with money from Lady Rhea Belladon, a peculiar widow who believes she can converse with her dead husband. Arbutny’s stock gambles falter, margins become precarious, and a desperate proposal to the widow is rebuffed after she consults with her late spouse, who prompts her to demand that the accounts be checked. Facing ruin, Arbutny nearly takes his own life, only to glimpse the news that their Grand National ticket has been drawn—giving him a glimmer of hope.
Back in Crystal’s flat, the three plan to honor their agreement: to hold the ticket and wait for the race rather than sell out early. Yet tensions flare. Arbutny’s desperation and jealousy rise, and in a moment of fury he strikes Crystal with a statue of Kwan Yin, inadvertently killing her. The broadcast confirms the thrill of victory—the horse has won the Grand National—yet the trio understands the danger: destroying the winning ticket would erase the very evidence that could link them to Crystal’s murder. They abandon the flat, but guilt gnaws at Arbutny, who collapses into the street, confessing to the crime amid a growing crowd and a bewildered police presence.
Meanwhile, David Shackleford returns with a pistol in mind to shutter Crystal’s life for good, only to discover that she is already dead, leaving him shaken and empty-handed. Johnny loops back to the bar where Icey finds him. With a hard-won sense of relief and possession, he rejects the consequences and sets the fateful ticket aflame, choosing to deny the future that could have been.
The tension between luck, loyalty, and guilt threads through the whole story, painting a portrait of three strangers whose ambitions collide with their actions, and of a world where fortune’s promises can be as perilous as a crime itself.
The film features Phoe Htoo, Gwa To, and Ma Soe.
