Captain Colt Saunders, Charlton Heston, rides back to Texas at the tail end of a war-torn era, when Reconstruction reshapes the land. Carpetbaggers have seized power and the law is in the hands of the corrupt Yankee tax commissioner Harrison, Bruce Bennett, and his tight-fisted deputy Cable, Forrest Tucker. When Colt comes to the aid of Lorna Hunter Saunders, Anne Baxter, after a grave insult to her honor, he is pulled into a web of deception she has already started threading. Lorna is a former St. Louis dance-hall girl, and her former employer, saloon owner Ruby LaSalle, Elaine Stritch, hints that Colt’s wealth could be an easy target for her schemes.
Back at the Bar S ranch, Innocencio Ortega, Gilbert Roland, a loyal grand vaquero, guards the spread as Colt’s absence left it exposed. Harrison uses a provisional government’s usurious tax law to squeeze the ranches into surrender. Colt’s black sheep brother Cinch, Tom Tryon, arrives seeking a share, and Colt, bound by a childhood accident that left him with one arm, feels obligated to help. Lorna is drawn closer to Colt, while the danger around them grows more tangled.
When Harrison’s minion Massey, John Harmon, tries to taint Lorna to spark a fatal gunfight, Innocencio and his sons foil the trap. Colt orders Lorna to return to Bar S and warns Cinch never to set foot on the ranch again. The plot thickens when Lorna discovers she is pregnant, and Colt offers to pay the value of his horses if she stays to give birth, keeping the child with him. Cinch then teams with Harrison to kill Colt and seize control, while Harrison and Cable scheme to murder witnesses who could testify.
Cinch returns for a final gambit, hoping to provoke a duel that will cement his claim. When Harrison’s gang arrives, violence erupts: Cinch and Cable shoot at each other, and Harrison and Massey are killed in the crossfire. In the aftermath, Colt has a change of heart and reconciles with Lorna, who finally hands him the child as agreed, signaling a fragile peace for the Bar S and its future.
