Griffin Byrne, an idealistic new history, English and maths teacher at Father Frank Larkin’s school in a predominantly Latino ghetto, faces a community where most graduates end up in crime and poverty. He takes special interest in Lee Cortes, a silent boy with a prodigious talent for cartoon drawing who constantly wears a Walkman, living under an abusive drug‑dealer brother and a struggling mother. Griffin shelters Lee, battles the surrounding cynicism, and strives to break the cycle despite repeated setbacks and personal cost.
