After losing his mining job in Hannover, Mario plans to return to Italy, but Totonno steals his passport to evade police and offers him work as a “magliaro,” a cloth seller. Enticed, Mario follows Totonno to Hamburg, where they must push Mayer’s fabrics amid hostility from a Polish gang, and Mario becomes enamored with Paula Mayer.
