Vijay killed Ashwin because he was the perpetrator who sexually assaulted and murdered Raji, an IT worker whose elderly father had pleaded with Vijay for help. Mithra died on Deepavali night when Vanamamalai, his brother Ratnam, and Inspector Karikalan invaded Vijay's home. They killed Vijay's mother Pappu and attempted to drown young Nivi. Mithra sacrificed herself to save Nivi from drowning, dying in the process while making Vijay promise to quit the police and protect their daughter.

Vanamamalai sought revenge because Vijay killed his son Ashwin, who was responsible for raping and murdering the IT worker Raji. When Vijay went to arrest Ashwin at Vanamamalai's residence, the minister claimed Ashwin had disappeared. Vijay later found and killed Ashwin anyway, sharing this truth directly with Vanamamalai, who swore vengeance for his son's death.

Vijay survived because Mithra convinced him to leave the house briefly on the night of the attack. When Vanamamalai's men attacked, Mithra was alone with Nivi and Vijay's mother Pappu. Annie discovered Vijay's identity gradually through their growing closeness in Alappuzha. She was Nivi's teacher and neighbor to Joseph Kuruvilla. As their bond deepened, Vijay trusted her with the truth one night and revealed that Joseph Kuruvilla was actually DCP Vijay Kumar, sharing his past with her.

Vanamamalai orchestrated the bus accident because he had learned that Vijay and Nivi had survived the Deepavali attack years earlier. He wanted to finish what he started by killing Nivi, the sole survivor of his previous attempt. The bus accident was designed to reach Nivi during her school excursion and eliminate her along with the other children.

Ratnam was killed by Vijay in the present timeline. After Vijay eliminated Inspector Karikalan, Vanamamalai tried to warn his brother Ratnam about Vijay's return. However, Ratnam refused to believe Vanamamalai and suspected his brother of orchestrating Karikalan's death. That night, Vijay confronted Ratnam at an under-construction building and kicked him to his death from a height.

Vijay was secretly reinstated to the police force by Commissioner Sibi Chakravarthy, who was secretly aware that Vijay had survived and was carrying out his revenge. After Vijay eliminated Vanamamalai and his men, Sibi Chakravarthy quietly re-employed him decades after his original departure, allowing Vijay to continue serving while living under an alias in Ladakh.

Vijay hangs his victims as a signature method of execution and a deliberate message to his enemies and the public. He killed Inspector Karikalan and hung his body from a station fan, then did the same with Vanamamalai. This brutal method serves as a grim demonstration of force, creating fear and spreading the rumor that Vijay has returned as a ghost to avenge his family.

Vijay moved to Ladakh under the alias Dharmeshwar to live a quieter life with his older daughter Nivi and Annie, who had become part of their family. From Ladakh, he continues to assist the CBI in solving cases while protecting his family from a distance. The high-altitude location provides isolation and allows him to maintain his vigilante work away from the memories of Chennai.
