Glyn Nash, a part-time, multi-talented freelancer, saves Hollywood director Erle Dester from a drunken crisis on the street, pulling him back from disaster and getting him home. Desperate, Nash attempts to refashion the narrative. He hides the will and tries to reconstruct a tale in which Dester killed his wife and then took his own life, placing the blame squarely on Helen while insisting that the couple was en route to the sanatorium against Dester’s wishes. He even confides in Marian, who chooses to leave the house rather than become a pawn in his plot. To fabricate the illusion of suicide, Nash stages a scene with Dester’s preserved body in the study and forges a typed note. The police examine the setup and depart, unconvinced by the elaborate cover, and Nash’s attempt to flee the city is thwarted as the authorities close in on him.

In the end, the net closes around Glyn Nash as the web of deceit unravels. The calculated scheme to steal Dester’s fortune collapses under the weight of the growing evidence, and Nash is arrested, his ambitions crushed by the very plan he thought would grant him wealth and a place in a dangerous game of duplicity.
