Elizabeth Foster is a very efficient secretary who effectively runs a diamond merchant firm. She is cunning, pragmatic, and willing to bend rules to save the business. After being drawn into the gang she uses her wits to predict outcomes, calm the situation, and steer events toward a favorable resolution.

David Walsh inherits the diamond firm from his uncle but knows little about diamonds. He is impulsive and eager to propose to Elizabeth with a ring purchased from a street vendor, only to be embarrassed when she reveals it is paste. He initially resists Elizabeth's plan to raise the money, but ultimately joins and helps rescue her and the jewels.

Joe is the gang member who blocks the back door and forces Elizabeth into the getaway car, then drives her away. He is part of the crew and becomes more entwined with Elizabeth as events unfold.

Johnny is the gang’s leader, orchestrating the smash-and-grab and initially reneging on Elizabeth's release. He is cunning and commands authority within the group, though his grip on power is tested by Elizabeth's influence.

Arthur is the fourth member of the gang who devises a plan that Elizabeth later endorses. He is strategic and persuasive, contributing to the gang’s evolving dynamics as Elizabeth shapes their course.

The Duke of Chiddingford is the noble whose family jewels become the target of the gang. His jewels form the central prize, around which Walsh crafts a scheme that entangles Elizabeth and the others.
