Murder unfolds with a laughing corpse. Reporter Patsy Reynolds and photographer Eddie Porter are sent to interview John Foster, head of the Emmerson Foundation, about a new listening device. Foster evades them, sending the pair to Professor Reynolds, the real inventor. They become tangled in shootings, shifting blueprints, a mysterious corpse that keeps reappearing in their car, the loss of their jobs, and a circle of people who suspect they are either killers or the next victims.
