While 19th‑century Greek “primitive” painter Theofilos worked, artists worldwide turned to everyday subjects—later labeled the Ashcan school in the U.S. Unknown in his lifetime, the biographical drama follows Theofilos from his 1868 birth on Lesbos through his army discharge to the emergence of his distinctive style.
