In a modest Japanese village, Ko‑Ko is forced into the role of executioner. With the Mikado due in a month, he must perform a death quickly and chooses Nanki‑Poo, who is heart‑broken over his unrequited love for Yum‑Yum. Nanki‑Poo agrees to sacrifice himself only if he can spend his remaining days with Yum‑Yum, who is already betrothed to Ko‑Ko.
