During the Allied occupation of Paris in the late stages of World War II, Boysie Oakes answers a fellow Englishman's call for help. In the ensuing chaos, he accidentally shoots and kills two men who are attempting to assassinate Major Mostyn. Mostyn survives and, to his own surprise, grows to believe that Oakes is a born killer.

Two decades later, Mostyn has risen to a colonel in British Intelligence and faces a wave of embarrassing security leaks. His boss orders him to find and hire an assassin to deal with the problem outside official channels. The aim is to salvage their careers and the agency's reputation.

Mostyn recruits Oakes into MI5 without telling him the real purpose of the job, tempting him with a lavish apartment and a flashy sports car. Oakes steps into a covert role that will blur the line between patriotism and crime. He has no idea what he has truly signed up for.

After completing a training course, Mostyn reveals Oakes's code name: L, for Liquidator, and explains that he is hired as a paid assassin. Oakes learns that resignation is not an option in this shadowy world. The truth hits him hard, yet he remains entangled in the operation.

Unable to kill, Oakes secretly hires Griffin, a freelance contract killer, to take on the dirty work. He keeps this agreement hidden to avoid exposing his own discomfort with killing. The deception grows as the mission unfolds.

Oakes becomes drawn to Iris, Mostyn's sexy secretary, despite a formal ban on spies and civilian employees fraternising. He begins to flirt and imagine a connection beyond any official assignment. The temptation places him at risk of discipline or worse.

Seeking a distraction, Oakes persuades Iris to spend a weekend with him on the glamorous Côte d'Azur. The trip deepens their chemistry but also raises questions about loyalties and the double life he's leading. Iris's presence blurs the line between ally and danger.

In the south of France, Oakes is captured by enemy agents led by Sheriek, who believes he is on assignment rather than there on a lark with Iris. Sheriek demands to know who Oakes's target is, threatening dire consequences. The encounter exposes the operation's fragility.

Sheriek's superior Chekhov is furious that the spy has gone beyond surveillance to a more dangerous approach. He orders Sheriek to arrange for Oakes's escape, avoiding a capture that could expose the broader plot. The risk to the operation intensifies.

Agent Quadrant arrives with a new mission for Oakes: stage a fake assassination attempt on the Duke of Edinburgh during a visit to an RAF base to test its security. The setup promises a high-stakes test without official sanction.

Just before Oakes pulls the trigger on a sniper rifle loaded with blanks, he realizes Mostyn has moved the Duke's position into the troop inspection, and Quadrant is actually an enemy agent. The plan to stage a flawless test has become a dangerous liability.

While Mostyn and Oakes are distracted by the loyalty test, Quadrant and an accomplice steal an advanced Vulture supersonic bomber. The theft escalates the stakes and reveals the depth of the conspiracy. Oakes braces for a flight that could topple careers and nations.

Oakes manages to wound Quadrant and boards the bomber before it can take off. The bomber's pilot turns out to be Iris, who reveals she is the coordinator of the entire operation. The revelation upends Oakes's assumptions about his allies.

Oakes overpowers Iris and, with autopilot and a seasoned Vulture pilot guiding him, returns the aircraft to base. Yet the encounter leaves him entangled with Iris and aware that more trouble lies ahead. The balance between loyalty and desire remains unsettled.
