What Happens in The Conduit: Full Plot Summary

The whole story of The Conduit (2016) explained, from the opening scene to the final frame: every key event, every twist and what it all adds up to. Read it as a quick recap before the sequel, to check a scene you missed, or to finally understand what really happened.

Set in the near future, The Conduit unfolds in a Washington, D.C. plagued by a mysterious flu-like disease called "the Bug," which weakens government security. This instability culminates in a series of devastating events: a terrorist strike on the Washington Monument, the assassination of a senator, and a shocking attempt on the President's life carried out by his own Secret Service detail. Amidst this chaos, Agent Michael Ford must battle an onslaught of creatures known as the Drudge and the humans under their control.

The story follows Agent Michael Ford, a Secret Service officer recruited into a clandestine organization called the Trust after saving President Charles Thompson. Ford is directed by the enigmatic commander John Adams to neutralize a terrorist threat and recover stolen technology. Initially, Ford is pitted against a leader named Prometheus, though Prometheus eventually becomes an unlikely ally.

The narrative begins with Ford awakening in a collapsed Metro tunnel after the Drudge invasion. Through a series of flashbacks, it is revealed that Ford was tasked with recovering a prototype called the All-Seeing Eye from Prometheus. During this mission, Ford is betrayed by the Trust and left for dead. He is subsequently rescued by Prometheus, who reveals that he is a former Trust member. Prometheus explains that Adams has been manipulating Ford to cover up the Trust's development of neuro-toxins.

As the city falls, Ford attempts to save the President, but the political turmoil leads President Thompson to sign over executive power to Adams. Following a desperate defense of the Pentagon, Ford discovers a massive Conduit in the subways that transports him to the Trust's secret headquarters. There, he discovers a horrifying truth: the Drudge are not aliens, but biological clones created on Earth using the genetic blueprint of a captive Prometheus.

After killing the original Prometheus to end the cloning cycle, Ford survives the destruction of the base—guided by the consciousness of Prometheus uploaded into the All-Seeing Eye—and escapes via a Conduit, vowing to hunt down Adams. In a final twist, it is revealed that Adams is actually Enlil, an alien exile who has spent 240 years plotting to seize control of Earth.

More Movies Like The Conduit, by Mood & Story

Curated lists built around what makes The Conduit tick: the same mood, the same kind of story or the same emotional payoff. Each list explains why these movies belong together.

Paranoia and Unreliable Identity in The Conduit

Hidden forces twist reality while a lone operative struggles to trust what remains. If you liked The Conduit, explore movies like it featuring hidden government programs, mind control, institutional betrayal, and destabilizing identity twists. These similar thriller stories turn trusted systems into sources of danger and keep questioning which version of the protagonist is real.

  • paranoid
  • ominous
  • mind control
  • conspiracy
  • identity crisis
  • betrayal
  • Tone: dark, paranoid, tense
  • Pacing: variable, revelation driven
Why these movies?

The story pattern: Typically, a protagonist begins with a mission and partial knowledge, then encounters evidence that allies and institutions are compromised. Fragmented timelines, hidden programs, and bodily revelations progressively destabilize identity and motive. The journey moves from covert confidence into betrayal, panic, and grim determination, often ending with partial survival rather than a clean victory.

Why they belong together: These films share a dark, claustrophobic mood and a habit of using revelation-heavy, nonlinear storytelling to transform the apparent threat. Government or institutional betrayal, mind control, cloning, and biological horror create a common sense of violated autonomy, making each twist matter emotionally as well as intellectually.

Apocalyptic Urban Survival Movies Like The Conduit

A fractured city becomes a lethal battlefield where every desperate escape reveals worse. Movies like The Conduit place ordinary people inside fast, desperate scenarios as cities fracture under invasion, terror attacks, and biological horror. If you liked its apocalyptic urgency, these similar horror-thriller stories combine collapsing public spaces, frantic escapes, and grim survival against enemies that remain difficult to understand.

  • apocalyptic
  • relentless
  • claustrophobic
  • urban collapse
  • desperate
  • gritty
  • Tone: dark, apocalyptic, desperate
  • Pacing: variable, frantic and relentless
Why these movies?

The story pattern: Stories in this thread begin with a functioning city or organized mission before signs of invasion and instability erupt. Panic spreads, public spaces become dangerous, and the protagonist is pushed from ordinary life into improvised survival. Frantic attacks alternate with grim aftermath scenes, exposing depleted resources and mutated threats; even when the immediate crisis ends, larger danger remains unresolved.

Why they belong together: The grouping is driven by a sustained sense of siege rather than mystery alone. City environments collapse under invasion, terror, or biological horror, while frantic action is interrupted by heavy aftermath and revelation passages. High danger, bleak imagery, and uncertain survival give these films a similarly relentless, claustrophobic rhythm.
