The story takes place in the Recôncavo Baiano, a coastal hinterland in Bahia, Brazil. This rural region is characterized by sugar plantations, rivers, mangroves, and open plains. The movie is set in 1924, a period when abolition is legally established but racial and economic hierarchies persist. His attempts to intimidate and brutalize Dinorá further escalate the conflict, and he ultimately kills Besouro using the ticum machete, Besouro's one vulnerability.

Exu is a spiritual entity who appears to Besouro and demands worship, initiating a supernatural dimension to the hero's journey. This entity's presence frames Besouro's power as part of a larger, ancestral struggle for freedom, intertwining ancestral power with Besouro's fate and marking a turning point in the narrative.

Quero-Quero is Besouro's childhood friend and rival who becomes an antagonist. Driven by jealousy over Dinorá's affection for Besouro, he frames Besouro for murder and reveals the ticum vulnerability to Venâncio, triggering harsher state retaliation against the community.
