The Arrogant

A dinner celebration for Giovanni and Elvira's anniversary turns sour as Elvira's father accuses Giovanni of arrogance, adultery, and recklessness. Giovanni remains unruffled, telling his father-in-law to die as soon as possible. Elvira slips away to fetch champagne, and Giovanni uses the moment to have a secret encounter with Elvira's sister; the father-in-law witnesses and tries to kill him with an axe, but Giovanni kills him instead. He later shouts into the night that he is his own king, master, faith, and god.

On the road and on the run along a desert highway, Giovanni, with a camera mounted on the front of his motorcycle, heads toward the ocean while a mysterious driverless black Cadillac shadows him. He picks up Julie, a waitress headed to a nearby town, and the trio stops at a secluded body of water where Julie swims. Giovanni then seduces Charlotte, a farm girl whose immature fiancé Pedro has been run off, and they drive away with the car still in pursuit.

In a ramshackle bar, Elvira's brothers Charles and Alphonse are tracking Giovanni. Alphonse nearly becomes the victim of biker thugs, but Giovanni arrives just in time to intervene and help subdue the gang. After the fight, Alphonse allows Giovanni to escape to continue the pursuit of his sister's husband-to-be, to Charles's dismay.

That same night, Giovanni nearly seduces Julie again with philosophy and dreamy eyes as they are chased half-naked up a tree by the pursuing Cadillac. The car eventually drives off, leaving them to spend the night perched in the tree.

The next morning Giovanni is bitten by a snake. Julie tries to seek help by pulling into a gas station. In a bizarre turn, three mute garage workers try to wash her with sponges, until a sheriff arrives and reveals the workers are not dangerous but miss their sister; Giovanni is treated at the hospital and fights for life amid a montage of flashbacks and strange imagery.

On the road again, Julie and Giovanni meet a homeless man in the desert. When the man asks for change, Giovanni offers a large sum if the man will swear there is no god; the man declines, but Giovanni gives him the money anyway.

That night Giovanni and Julie follow a happy couple to a small desert inn, where he invites them to drinks and seduces the bride-to-be in front of choreographed dancers. After a brawl with the fiancé, Giovanni and the woman have sex somewhere in the desert.

The next morning a man arrives seeking repayment of a loan. Giovanni deftly spins the conversation away from the money's origin and his true motives, avoiding a confrontation. He then speaks with his ex-wife by phone, pretending to be a changed man following God.

Giovanni and Julie argue over his hypocrisy and false piety, and she leaves him. Later, in a drunken state, Giovanni places his head under the wheel of the pursuing black Cadillac, inviting danger as the chase continues.

From the darkness, Elvira's brothers Charles and Alphonse appear and offer Giovanni a chance to redeem himself and return to his sister. He refuses, declaring that they will have their face-off the next day.

Before the anticipated confrontation, Giovanni and Julie consummate their relationship as she finally agrees to be with him. The moment underscores the chaos and volatility surrounding his pursuit of power and desire.

On the road, Giovanni and the black Cadillac continue their high-stakes pursuit, weaving through traffic until their motorcycle nearly collides with a tractor-trailer. The tension peaks as the chase rages toward its unknown end.

It is implied Giovanni has died in the crash, with his motorcycle crushed and emergency crews around. In the film's final image, he emerges from the black car, alive, dressed as a priest in front of a church and smiling with a devious gleam, suggesting he remains in control of his fate.
