As a fierce storm rages, Patch saves Sands from a deadly plunge, pulling him back onto the deck and forcing a reluctant alliance. The pair work to keep the vessel afloat, stoking the boilers in the flooded engine room to coax steam from a damaged engine. Patch insists on grounding the Mary Deare in the shallow waters near the Minquiers to ensure stability until an official board of inquiry can determine salvage rights and responsibility. Their plan hinges on keeping the ship literally above water long enough for a proper examination, a precarious choice in a region notorious for treacherous currents and hidden hazards.

Upon reaching land, Sands learns that survivors—led by Second Officer Higgins Richard Harris—are painting Patch as a foolhardy commander who gave an unnecessary order to abandon ship. A press report amplifies the tension, noting that the ship’s owner is pursuing a substantial claim for the loss of the Mary Deare. Pressure from the owner and the ship’s insurer tightens its grip on Patch and Sands, who remains Patch’s ally even as the case grows more complex.

Patch’s version gradually comes into focus through conversations with Captain Taggart’s daughter Janet Taggart Virginia McKenna. The inquiry moves forward, but Patch is denied the chance to present his full account in the official record as the case takes an abrupt turn: an aerial survey finds the Mary Deare and a French salvage crew prepares to refloat the vessel. Janet senses the owner’s hand at work and warns Patch that Higgins could be aboard when the rescue team attempts to salvage the ship. Patch’s instinct tells him that a lone operative could sink the vessel in deep water, thereby sealing the conspiracy and masking its crimes for good.
