Pat Conroy, an ambitious yet slightly rebellious idealist, accepts a posting from the Bennington County school‑board superintendent to teach the all‑black children of an impoverished fishing community on Yamacraw Island. Headmistress Brown enforces rigid, punitive discipline, relying on scolding and spanking. Conroy works tirelessly to inspire and educate his students and gain parental support, but after finally reaching them, the staunch conservative authorities refuse to renew his contract.
