Nick plots to kill Matt after Matt punches him during a heated argument about Mary's relationship with Matt. Nick's jealousy and desire to protect his control over the circus and his family drive him to scheme a deadly trap. He knows the unloaded gun won't actually defend Matt against Caesar, expecting the lion to attack and eliminate his rival.

Earlier confrontations establish Nick's ruthless side when he fires Hoffman and keeps the lions despite owing him money.

After Caesar injures Hoffman in the bar fight, Flo drives Matt to Nick's farm to hide him from the police. She does this despite knowing Nick explicitly forbids circus people from mixing with his family. Flo's loyalty to Matt and her complicated position as Nick's girlfriend who secretly loves someone else drives her to defy his rules.

Flo's initial sheltering of Matt hints at her growing feelings for him, which later develop into full romance.

After Matt tames Caesar in the grocery store, Nick hires him to work alongside Hoffman the Great. When Hoffman gets drunk before a show, Nick persuades Matt to step in as replacement. Matt's successful performance proves he's capable, so Nick fires Hoffman but keeps the lions, claiming the circus owes him money, and Matt becomes the new lion trainer.

The grocery store confrontation directly leads to Nick recruiting Matt, setting the entire chain of events in motion.

Flo tells Matt to follow his heart and pursue Mary even though Flo herself has fallen in love with Matt. Her selflessness stems from wanting Matt to be happy, even if that happiness doesn't include her. This choice reveals Flo's complex loyalty, she defies Nick's orders while also releasing Matt to be with his true love.

Earlier moments of intimacy between Flo and Matt establish their growing connection before Flo pushes him toward Mary.

When Nick returns to the farm and finds Matt there against his orders, a heated argument erupts. Nick slaps Mary for disrespect, and Matt steps in to defend her by punching Nick. This violent act escalates their rivalry into open warfare and directly triggers Nick's decision to plot Matt's murder.

Tensions have been building since Nick ordered Matt to leave and never see Mary again, making the slap the breaking point.

In a city bar, Matt tries to apologize to Hoffman for taking over his job. Hoffman provokes him and goads him into a fight. The brawl spills back to the circus, and when Hoffman is shoved against Caesar's cage, the lion attacks and wounds him severely. This incident forces Flo to rescue and hide Matt.

Nick's decision to fire Hoffman and keep the lions creates Hoffman's resentment, setting up the confrontational bar scene.
