Trapeze

Mike initially refuses because he's bitter about his own career-ending fall from the trapeze. After suffering an injury that left him walking with a cane, he no longer believes in pursuing dangerous feats and sees Tino's ambitious request as naive and reckless. His reluctance also stems from having already been through the grueling process of mastering the triple himself, and he doesn't want to relive that intensity through a newcomer.

Mike agrees to add Lola because she's persuasive and the circus owner is pushing for a more dramatic act to draw crowds. Additionally, Mike likely sees potential in creating a trio that could match the spectacle of his former solo work. His judgment becomes compromised as he becomes attracted to Lola, even while recognizing she's mercenary and manipulative.

Tino resents Mike's late attempts to warn him about Lola's true motives. By the time Mike speaks up, Tino is already enamored with Lola and sees Mike's warnings as jealous interference rather than genuine concern. The conflict between loyalty to his mentor and his romantic feelings for Lola ultimately leads Tino to choose Lola, severing his professional and personal relationship with Mike.

Mike's earlier reluctance to train Tino foreshadows the rift that develops when Mike finally offers his counsel too late.

Bouglione removes the safety net to prevent Tino from attempting the dangerous triple somersault. As the circus owner, he's concerned about liability and the risk of a performer dying or being seriously injured on his watch. By taking down the net, he hopes to force the cancellation of the stunt, but Tino decides to proceed anyway, making the act even more perilous.

Mike pushes Tino to attempt the triple because he finally believes Tino is ready to succeed. After months of training, Mike has seen Tino's progression and believes he can complete the feat. Additionally, with circus VIP John Ringling North watching, Mike sees an opportunity for all of them to secure a better future. Mike's own lost glory drives him to give Tino this chance.

Tino succeeds because of months of rigorous training under Mike's guidance. Mike was the sixth man ever to master the triple, and he passed on his precise technique to Tino. Despite the removed safety net and enormous pressure, Tino's skill, determination, and practice overcome the odds, allowing him to land the dangerous feat in front of the VIP audience.

Mike leaves because he no longer wants to perform. His career-ending fall left him physically and emotionally damaged, and watching Tino achieve what he once did reminds him of what he lost. Rather than returning to the trapeze as part of North's circus, Mike chooses to walk away, preferring to leave his glory days behind and start fresh.

Lola follows Mike because her feelings have genuinely shifted toward him throughout the story. While she initially courted Tino believing he could become a star, she develops real affection for Mike despite, or perhaps because of, his wounded, brooding nature. Mike saw through her mercenary facade from the start, and this honest recognition of who she is creates a deeper connection than her initial attraction to Tino's ambition.

Mike waits too long because he struggles with his own conflicting feelings about Lola. He sees her mercenary nature clearly but is also drawn to her romantically, creating internal conflict that prevents him from speaking up sooner. By the time he tries to warn Tino, the warning appears jealous and self-serving rather than genuine, causing Tino to dismiss it entirely.

North is impressed by Tino's successful triple somersault, which is an extremely rare and dangerous feat that few performers can accomplish. Seeing the potential for a spectacular act, North offers jobs to all three, Mike, Tino, and Lola, viewing their trio as a valuable addition to his circus. The performance itself serves as an impromptu audition that earns them a lucrative career opportunity.
