The Wages of Fear

The Southern Oil Company (SOC) is revealed to be the overarching force controlling the local economy of Las Piedras, instilling fear and desperation among the townspeople. This oppressive atmosphere highlights the community's struggle against exploitation.

Mario is shown neglecting his devoted lover, Linda, leading to tensions not only in their relationship but also between him and Jo. As Mario shares memories of Paris with Jo, their bond begins to fracture under the pressure of their harsh reality.

The offer of a significant $2,000 reward per driver ignites a glimmer of hope among the desperate residents. Four drivers, including Mario, Bimba, and Luigi, step forward, eager to escape their grim circumstances, while Jo takes the place of an absent Smerloff.

Mario and Jo embark on their perilous journey in one truck, while Luigi and Bimba trail behind in another. They deliberately stagger their departure by thirty minutes to increase their chances of survival, aware of the dangers that lie ahead.

Disaster unfolds when Luigi and Bimba's truck suffers a catastrophic explosion, claiming both their lives instantly. This loss sends shockwaves through Mario and Jo, who rush to the site, finding a ruptured pipeline spewing oil into a vast crater.
