Carol is drawn through mental telepathy to the ancient city of Kuma, setting her on a path to become the reincarnation of its lost ruler, Ayesha. She is fated to be the consort of Kallikrates, the city's former lover. This event begins the prophecy that will drive the entire quest.

Men-Hari, a Magi, seeks immortality by entering the sacred flame during a rare astronomical alignment. He uses his mental powers to compel Carol to come to Kuma, fueling his scheme. His ruthlessness makes him the principal antagonist from the outset.

Za-Tor, longtime Magi leader, and Dr. Phillip Smith—who meets and falls in love with Carol—swear to stop Men-Hari's plan. Their confrontation with Men-Hari complicates the mission, and Carol and Phillip are later separated during the perilous journey. The budding romance adds a personal stake to the conflict.

Kassim, a local mystic, attempts to break Men-Hari's control over Carol, sensing the danger. Men-Hari discovers Kassim’s interference and grows more determined to seize Kuma's power. The threat from Kassim raises the stakes for the central plot.

By Kallikrates' bidding, Men-Hari leads the Magi in a forbidden occult ritual to overpower Kassim and crush any resistance. The tumultuous ceremony demonstrates Men-Hari's escalating control over the Magi. The confrontation clears the way for his ascent.

Carol and Phillip become separated during the ordeals but both press forward toward Kuma in hopes of reunion. Their separate paths test their resolve and reinforce their bond. The road to Kuma remains perilous for both of them.

Upon reaching Kuma, Carol is welcomed by the city, reaffirming her destined role. Phillip is imprisoned by Men-Hari's supporters as a perceived threat to the plot. The city itself becomes the arena for the power struggle to come.

Za-Tor speaks with Phillip and recognizes the danger Men-Hari poses to Kuma. He commits to aiding Phillip in his fight against the usurper and departs to rally support. This marks a shift in leadership and adds urgency to the resistance.

Sharna, a servant girl loyal to Kallikrates, helps Phillip escape from captivity. At the same time, Za-Tor attempts to incite a rebellion among the Magi against Men-Hari. The escape and the political unrest set the stage for a major confrontation.

Phillip arrives at Kallikrates' chambers just as the sacred flame is ignited, bringing the ritual to its climax. His urgent cries reach Carol, breaking Men-Hari's control over her and triggering a crucial turn in the power struggle. The moment pivots the story toward a decisive confrontation.

Za-Tor confronts Men-Hari and reveals the truth of his plot to Kallikrates. Kallikrates orders the release of Carol and Phillip and forbids Men-Hari from entering the sacred flame. The king’s stance marks a crucial turning point in Kuma's fate.

Enraged by his failure, Men-Hari stabs Za-Tor in the stomach. He then attempts to kill Phillip, but Kallikrates' guards strike him down at the king's command. The traitor's downfall seals the immediate threat to Kuma.

Desperate and betrayed, Kallikrates re-enters the sacred flame and dies. Sharna tries to intervene, but the king ages hundreds of years in seconds and crumbles to dust. Kuma is engulfed by the flame’s power as the city’s fate shifts toward ruin.

Za-Tor revives briefly to pray for Kuma’s destruction, recognizing the city’s corruption. The sacred flame erupts outward and an earthquake tears Kuma apart. The Magi’s order collapses as the city is doomed.

Phillip and Carol narrowly escape the collapsing city as the sacred flame consumes its last remnants. The final moment sees the last fragments of the giant Ayesha statue engulfed by the flame, signaling Kuma and the Magi’s end.
