Maximus, Claude Rains is an American performer who fronts a traveling music-hall act in England, presenting himself as the “King of the Mind Readers.” He travels with his parents and his wife, Rene, Fay Wray, who serves as his glamorous assistant. Rene’s skill lies in a carefully guarded secret code that helps sell the illusion to unsuspecting audiences. For the first part of the act, the tricks remain staged, the reactions manufactured, and the money poured in. Yet everything changes the moment Maximus spots Christine Shawn, Jane Baxter, in the crowd. The moment Christine enters the scene, Maximus discovers that his act begins to bleed into reality.
