Lois Conway [Esther Williams] is a music teacher at a small-town high school, in a community still shaken by a recent murder. When she starts receiving notes from an anonymous admirer, she suspects her favorite student, Sandy [John Wilder], might be responsible, telling him they could never be lovers. The notes grow more menacing, and in the latest letter she is invited to meet at the school’s lockers after hours. She goes to the meeting, hoping to avert danger, but is attacked by a shadowy intruder who is later identified as Leonard Bennett [John Saxon], the school’s star football player.
She manages to escape, dropping her purse in the process, and is helped by Lieutenant Harry Graham [George Nader]. He urges her to press charges, but Lois hopes the matter will fade if she avoids a formal case. Back at home, she discovers the purse on her table, and, certain the intruder is still inside, orders him to leave. The thief bangs through the door, and Lois becomes certain Leonard is her attacker. Leonard hurries home without his domineering father, Mr. Bennett [Edward Andrews], noticing his absence, while Mr. Bennett lectures his son about the dangers of women, a stance shaped by his own history with his wife.
The next day Lois reports the incident to principal Pendleton [Les Tremayne], but Leonard denies everything, and Pendleton protects the school’s prized athlete by pressing Lois to provide stronger evidence. As word spreads that Lois is pursuing Leonard, her personal and professional life starts to unravel. One day, she pulls him out of class to reason with him, but he refuses to listen. Meanwhile, she grows closer to Graham, who struggles to understand why she remains sympathetic to Leonard.
She decides to visit the Bennetts again, but Mr. Bennett resents interference and accuses Lois of seducing Leonard. He is shocked to learn that the police are now involved, and learns that Leonard has been sneaking out to see a waitress he has dated in the past. Later, Graham accompanies Lois to a football game, where fingerprints from Leonard’s locker match those found at Lois’s place.
At a school dance, she warns Leonard that the police discovery is imminent, assuring him he will get into serious trouble if he does not come clean. Leonard, for the first time, speaks truthfully to her, but they are interrupted by Mr. Bennett, who convinces Leonard that Lois is manipulating him. Leonard asks her to meet him in the cloak room to discuss the matter, but Lois is unaware that Mr. Bennett and Pendleton are hiding in the same room. Her presence convinces them she must be having an affair, and Lois, framed by Leonard, ends up in Graham’s arms and is arrested as the boy is taken into custody.
At the police station, the now-suspended Lois is brought in by Graham to compel a confession from Leonard. During the interrogation, they are told that another man has admitted to the murder. Graham wants to continue prosecuting Leonard for breaking into Lois’s apartment, but she insists on dropping the case and orders him to bring the boy home. Back at Lois’s house, Mr. Bennett bursts from her closet and assaults her. Leonard, moved by the idea of being forgiven, confesses to Graham that he wrote the letters and broke into her apartment, and asks to walk home to think. Graham returns to Lois, and upon arriving, they see Bennett escaping and chase him to his house. With no key, Bennett climbs a trellis to his son’s room but cannot open the window, falls to the patio below, and dies instantly.
