The Ugly Duckling

Joe Loss and his Orchestra play at a lively dance, setting the mood for the night. Henrietta Jekyll's Old Time Dance Team and Henry Jekyll are introduced, with Victor reluctantly taking over the conducting as Henry botches the routine.

Henry's ineptitude is highlighted as he returns home in a state of disarray. Victor and Henrietta worry about him, and Henry goes to bed with his golliwog next to him.

Reginald Bannister woos Henrietta but secretly suggests keeping Henry out of the way if they marry. His interference foreshadows later complications.

In the pharmacy lab, Snouty visits Henry and accuses him of being a square. The lab explodes in the rear yard, revealing a metal box with an old scroll.

Henry drinks the Jekyll formula and transforms into Teddy Hyde, a suave, fearless alter ego. He goes to the local dance hall, attracting attention and making a memorable entrance.

At the bar, Teddy is unrecognized by Victor but belittles him, drawing the attention of the dance hall crooks. The boss, Dandy, is impressed and recruits him for a planned robbery.

The potion wears off as Teddy leaves, and Henry awakens in bed with a pounding headache, convinced the night was a dream. He has no memory of his exploits.

Henry accidentally drinks the formula again, turning into Teddy Hyde once more and heading off to join Dandy for the robbery. The stolen persona continues to complicate his life.

Teddy breaks into a house through a roof light, cracks a safe, and steals valuable jewels before the formula wears off and Henry is left with the loot. He does not realize he has the jewels when the spell ends.

The next morning, Victor and Snouty discover Henry with jewels in his pocket. They plan to return the jewels, and Snouty infiltrates Dandy's office but is caught and reveals Henry's intent.

Victor and Henry recall Hyde and attempt to replace the jewels at a special event attended by Henrietta and Reginald. Dandy and a sidekick plot another theft, and the pair confront their fear of heights on the roof while dodging detection.

The police and show organizers realize the jewels are missing, but Henry and Victor manage to locate the still-open safe and return the jewels just in time. Dandy realizes the jewels are back and pulls a gun, only to be knocked out by Victor while Snouty nudges Henry toward action.

In a special event honoring Henry, he and Snouty, wearing a dress, dance for the first time. The moment marks a turning point as Henry embraces the crowd-pleasing side of Hyde without losing himself.
